View Full Version : Site timing you out
Hey,
I was in the middle of typing a post and took little to no time in between thoughts and typing those thoughts and yet after pouring out my soul, I hit post and was told that I had been timed out. Can you fix this, it is so very frustrating and this is not the first or second time this has happened to me.
I have no desire to go back and rewrite it now to be honest.
Thanks,
Gigi

It's definately a race against time. Gigi thanks for bringing up some of these issues we have been concerned about.

Gigi: As I mentioned in another thread this morning, ask for an autosave feature on the forums. It will save many a headache!
Sorry you lost all your work.

Thanks for the tip, Anne. Yes, an autosave would do the trick for sure. I can even understand timing someone out for inactivity but I was typing the entire time and so never even thought that there was even an option for this to happen since it usually happens when you there is no movement/activity coming from the user. Oh well...

Hey Gigi-
Sorry to hear you were timed out in the middle of a post! Unfortunately, there is no built-in autosave function...
But I was able to increase the timeout from 15 minutes to 60 minutes. Hopefully that should help make sure this doesn't happen again!
Richard
Thanks, Richard. I guess I am still unclear as to what constitutes a time out since I had never stopped typing. I always thought it to be inactivity from the user in any form, and not the amount of time it takes you to complete the post while typing. What is the deal on this?

No problem! When you start a post, the software doesn't actually know if you're typing or not, it bases the timeout on click activity.
For example, if you start typing a post, the system doesn't recognize anything until you click "Submit Reply" or "Preview Post", etc. So, if you started typing a post and took longer than 15 minutes, the software didn't realize you were doing that, and timed you out... causing your post to be lost.
This should now be addressed, as I've increased the timeout to 60 minutes. Let me know if there are any other issues.

ya know i get timed out all the time....but my post is never lost. When I hit submit and it says I've timed out, I always use the log in that pops up on the time out page. I use the one that appears in the center of the page and my post pops up as submitted. If I need to edit, of course I edit. I always copy my submission if I know my post took too long for me to write, just in case. But so far I've not had to paste my copied post.
Just my 2 cents. :D
