"Long before Willie Nelson and the rest of America knew who Los Lonely Boys were, they were playing our stage. We knew then what you know now, that this band has staying power!
This story starts in the late summer of 2000 when I received a telephone call from Kevin Wommack the principal of Loophole Entertainment, asking me if I would book a band he was working with into the club sight (and ears) unseen. Kevin's words to me were, "I know you will love them." At that time, I had been booking music represented by Kevin for years and, although I'm not sure Kevin formally represented the band at the time, his word was good enough for me. Kevin told me a little bit about the band and attempted to describe their sound, which wasn't exactly easy since it is "their sound." I told him that we would put them on our annual SRV Jam and bill them as our "Special guests.”
Kevin, or someone from his office, sent me a 5 song demo. We began playing the CD between sets on a regular basis as we promoted the Jam. This particular event sold out every year and over the years had included legends like "Dangerous" Dan Tolar, Andy Timmons and others. This year our full house was going to get an ear full of Los Lonely Boys.
The night of the annual SRV Birthday Jam, we were packed and the crowd got an ear full. The first 3 songs on this CD are the first 3 songs that Los Lonely Boys ever played in Dallas and the first 3 songs that hit our customers square in the ear. What none of us were expecting was to also get an eye full. When Henry lit up his guitar and Jojo played his bass blindfolded on the floor like a piano, believe me, the boys had everyone's attention because this wasn't just a gimmick, this was quality musicianship in an unconventional manner. When Ringo got off the drum kit and they all changed instruments without missing a note, it just added to the jaw dropping performance. Listen close to the band introduction after that 3rd song.
I was sold! I have seen and listened to thousands of high quality live bands and it was obvious to me that the only thing standing in the way of a grand-slam home run with LLB was getting them in front of some true music lovers. The rest would take care of itself.
We invited the band back to play on November 30th to open for guitar master Andy Timmons and a full house of new future fans. The live set that follows the first 3 songs on this CD was recorded November 30, 2000, the evening of the tragic loss of the band's grandmother. This show is dedicated in its entirety to her memory. The set starts off with "Heaven" and includes "Señorita" and "Dime Mi Amor" for a total of thirteen songs.
This is a must have CD for a real taste of where the music that America is falling in love with today comes from. LLB demonstrate their raw musical and vocal talents along with giving us a true understanding of their roots influences. Every gut wrenching note and vocal is presented from deep within. That night they were playing for their grandmother and she was smiling.
