Twin bills on tap for Meijer Gardens concerts
Sunday, April 06, 2008
GRAND RAPIDS -- Great things come in twos this summer at Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park.

That's a recurring theme in the Gardens' sixth season of outdoor amphitheater concerts: Several shows boast high-profile double bills, with one -- blues guitarists Keb' Mo' and Robert Cray -- delivering the first two-night stand in series history.

The musical double-headers with headline-caliber artists include guitar phenom Derek Trucks and guitarist-singer Susan Tedeschi on July 9, the Tex-Mex-flavored Los Lonely Boys and Los Lobos on Aug. 7, Mo and Cray on Aug. 13-14, and singer-songwriter Jeff Daniels and guitarist Kelly Joe Phelps on Aug. 28. Beyond that, the Gardens kicks off its summer series June 4 with Cake, a popular, alternative/college rock band from California best known for the song "Short Skirt/Long Jacket," and on July 24 brings in country music singer Sara Evans, a headliner at last June's B-93 Birthday Bash in Ionia.

Singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett (July 10) and Scottish rock-pop singer KT Tunstall (Aug. 11) round out the series along with the previously announced swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (June 12) and the pedalsteel guitar-laced Robert Randolph Revival (June 16).

So far, it adds up to the Gardens' strongest concert lineup -- and the strongest sellout potential for the intimate, 1,800-seat amphitheater -- since the series began in 2003.

"I look at our lineup this year, and I'm really excited," said David Hooker, the Gardens' president and CEO. "We have very high hopes for it," he said. "This will be the first time we've had that double bill, and we feel confident in that."

Discounted tickets go on sale to Gardens members May 3-16. Public ticket sales begin May 17 at all Star Tickets Plus outlets, 222-4000 or starticketsplus.com. The ticket service will even set up sales at the Gardens from May 3 to May 24, allowing ticket-buyers to avoid convenience fees and service charges by purchasing tickets on-site.

Wow, thanks for the heads up! I was hoping they would be swinging through Michigan and with Los Lobos too. I just visited the Meijer Gardens for the first time last summer and it is a beautiful place.

Can't wait!
