Bela Update

Just wanted to let everyone know that one of our most active fans is not so active right now. Bela is in the hospital suffering with a broken leg (extremely broken, I might add!) and can use your well wishes and prayers. For all who may want to send a card or your well wishes, she is at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and it looks like she may be there till at least Monday. She goes in for surgery tomorrow for a very bad break to be mended.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her.

I am sorry you are injured. A broken leg is quite painful. My son went through it and the "rod and screw" surgery. The worst part was the rehab after the rod was removed a year later. Get well soon! :) I know this won't keep you down for long......there are LLB shows coming for gosh sakes.... :eek:

Bela had one surgery on her ankles but needs another one in the meantime she got pneumonia, she is still in the hospital.
Here is what Mike has to say
"If her pneumonia abates as expected, she will be operated on again during the middle of next week. Otherwise, the doctors will simply wait till she gets better. Right now, fixing her leg is their lowest priority."


I am printing out everyones thoughts and sending Bela our love in a LLB card so she knows how her LLB familia is thinking of her while she recovers. I know this will put a smile on her face! :)

Hey Bela friends. . . Just thought I'd mention that She's not up for talking on the phone very long right now, but appreciates all the thoughts and prayers.

I suggest we can send her cards, gifts directly to the hospital, but probably do it NOW if you are, so that they reach her before she leaves the hospital. Boston isn't that close to where she lives and hopefully she won't be in the hospital for too long. It's very tough though, please keep her in your prayers.

Everyone,
One of our most endeared familia member needs our prayers, in a big way. Bela is in the hospital right now and the situation is very dire. What began as a bad break to the leg after her taking a fall, has led to severe complications and Bela is fighting for her life right now in a Boston hospital.

She can't speak or eat and breathing is becoming more difficult from what I understand. Visitors must be masked due to her weakened condition and immune system right now. Mike, her husband has been keeping me updated. I spoke to Bela just a few days ago and she was her lively self and full of spirit and so the news from Mike this morning was mind blowing, to say the least. Of course, at that time, Bela did not mention the seriousness of her condition to me and spent the bulk of our time on the phone making suggestions on how we can all come together as a more cohesive unit to help promote the boys' new record. Unbelievable!!! Mike was not exaggerating when he told me she was street teaming on the operating table during the first surgery - that's Bela for you!!!

Mike will continue to update me, I'm sure but the prognosis right now due to blood clots in her lungs and infection which was discovered I suppose after a second surgery this week is not so bright and she has an ICU respiratory team and a team of infectious disease specialists studying her case. I am just asking everyone to pray as each of you knows how and in whatever way that may be so that together we can get enough positive energy out there to reach Bela in Boston and to look over her and protect her. I'm sure Mike can use some of that good energy and prayer right now too.

Hi there,
I got an update last night from Charlene who has spoken with Mike. Here it is folks...

Early this morning Bela’s condition worsened, and the doctors did a Bronchoscope. They found she had a lot of inflammation in the lungs and not as much fluid, as they had thought. She is heavily sedated and has a breathing tube, they are waiting for the results.

Mike wants everyone to know, how much they appreciate the prayers and everyone’s concern.

At this point, it is difficult for him to get to a computer to answer emails, or return calls. Mike said he will call me, and asked if I would post any updates. The least I can do, is help in this small way, and take some of that burden, off his shoulders. My prayers continue for God’s healing hands, to surround Bela, and take care of her.

Thanks to all who have continued praying for Bela.

Standing on Faith that the Good Lord will touch the minds of the doctors and nurses and every health care provider involved in Bela's care with the knowledge to treat whatever it is that is causing the pneumonia. Oh, I pray to God that it's not MRSA. Hospitals are KNOWN for spreading that accidentally. It happened to my grandfather when he went in for surgery. PLEASE, PLEASE someone let her husband know to ask the doctors to rule out MRSA pneumonia!

Michelle, My sister in law works here in Baystate Medical Center, and she said they have to quarantine people who have that, but all I know is that it's a staph infection. Lets hope they find out what's wrong soon.

They DO have to quarantine them. But some are reluctant to admit it's MRSA because that means the hygiene in the hospital is sub-par. Which it is in a majority of hospitals. A lot of places are using that hand sanitizer stuff in between patients and it's JUST NOT ENOUGH. I read a study that says NOTHING substitutes hand washing with soap and water, not even hand sanitizer, in a hospital setting. I just hope her family is extremely vigilant and pursues everything possible. It seems like a lot of doctors/hospitals want to deny it until there is nothing else they can "blame" it on. I wanted to make sure that her husband keeps that in mind and is vigilant and questions the doctors ALWAYS! My mom always says that when someone you love is hospitalized, you gotta be like Shirley MaClaine in Terms of Endearment... "GIVE MY DAUGHTER THE SHOT!!!!!" Who cares if you gotta piss the nurses off a little bit (my mom is a nurse by the way, lol).

MAKE them wash their hands EVERY SINGLE TIME they walk into the room. Demand it. Tell them you want to see them washing their hands... wearing gloves. They'll know that they can't be lazy with their hygiene around Bela. I'll be praying that she doesn't have MRSA. You're right though, if they didn't quarantine her she probably doesn't have it... but we want to make sure that she doesn't get it on top of all she's gone through already.

Oh, and MRSA IS a staph infection.... it stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

first and foremost I add my prayers for Bela's speedy and complete recovery and my best wishes to Mike. It is so hard watching someone you love suffer.

This may sound a bit gloomy and not adding any positivity to the situation, but I'll go ahead and say it. My brother-in-law just simply lost hos footing in his driveway two years ago. His ankle broke in several places. It required surgery to put some pins and plates around the breaks. It was so scary. He was in hospital for months, and infection got deep into him via the incision. He is going in for another operation soon. It has completely changed his life, affecting his employment, his motorbike riding and his ability to travel overseas, things he was passionate about.
I hope things aren't so difficult for Bela

Mike called me early this morning, he said Bela has had some serious complications and her family had been called to the hospital. He had been at the hospital for the past 48 hours and had not been able to call or email me, which I assured him I understood. During the show in New Mexico last night, Tasina and I held hands and prayed for our Bela. We felt her presence with us at the show. And, on the drive to the Inn of the Mountain Gods, we went through a town called Belen, and we both said it was sign that Bela was with us.

Renee, I think Bela is in what they call a "drug induced coma". They keep her sedated, so she can heal without any stress. Hopefully she will get well enough soon, for them to stop the drugs. I too, worry all the time for Bela. I hope & pray she gets back to her old self ASAP! Keep up the prayers! Rosie

Our prayers tonight included reminiscing about our sister Bela. .. I've been so fortunate to have been very close to her, like so many people who've spent time with her . . .she's always so passionate about everything she believes in. . it's been an honor that she calls me her sister. .

Ronnie and I met right after I spent a week with Bela in her home in Massachusetts. . she's been our counselor/advisor/friend/cheerleader/support/shoulder to cry on/ and most of she's always sees the best in us, no matter what we've been through. . .

Sara, When I read this I started to cry just the thought of losing one of our team members would be sad,with that being said now our Bela is resting so that her body can heal is heart wrenching as her Familia waits patiently for her recovery. As you see her in Tasina's family gathering photos she is so happy.

I talked to Mike last night and Bela is making some progress. She has been awake on and off and responds by blinking her eyes. Her oxygen levels have been improving every day and they are weaning her off the respirator. So good to hear this great news. She has a long way to go, but for sure moving in the right direction. Mike thanks everyone again for their prayers. Thanks everyone for being patient with the updates. Mike has been at the hospital so much, that I sometimes don't hear from him for a week, except maybe a quick email to say things have been the same. I'll post an update when I hear from him again. ive been reading and sending my prayers as long as i was able to
get back into the forum, and to see it transition into something
very very postitive now, im thankful that the Good Lord listens
to our prayers, each and every one of us that has kept her in our
prayers has built on her faith to recovery. That is the power of
La Onda, we unite and pray when needed!
My prayers continue of course, and especially for Mike, i know how
stressful being in the hospital can be, i know what he must be going
through - when my sister Lettie was in the hospital 3 yrs ago now,
i did NOT want to leave her side for any reason for more than i
needed to. By the time i was leaving i knew what every button,
every scheduled medication, and every number in her ICU room.
I was tired and weary - so i can definantly relate to him in his
situation. Bless his soul. Bela will be so much stronger when she
gets home, before we know it she'll be OndaRoad again!!!

I am going to see Bela tommorow Sat April 26th at the Spaulding Rehab in Boston with Nancy, When I talked to her she says she does therapy all week and gets tired out, No therapy on the weekends so she will be up for visits, at this point she can't do much, But I was amazed at how good she sounded, She wanted me also to say THANK YOU to all for the card paryers and concerns, she feels blessed to be part of a caring community.
I will fill you in on more after my visit.

Ok I'm still beaming from our uplifting visit with Bela,

Considering all she has been tru in the last 2 months she looks good.
The most inportant thing is that her spirits are up, she knows she is in for a LONG Haul.

Our visit was short because she gets tired out easy, then after a short rest she will be rearing to go for a bit more, then gets tired again. So that cycle continues.

True to Bela form she was dressed in LLB atire, and so was Mike I might add, She had all the cards and letters around her, she reads a few at a time.

She is a head on her physical therapy, because she is progressing well. She is setting the pace for the nurses, usually it's the other way around the nurses tell the patients what to do next, but not in Belas case.

Please continue to pray for her complete recovery.

Hi Everyone!
I am back, finally! I have been home for alomost two weeks. I am still very weak from the ARDS/coma, etc. I still can't walk on my own. I can go a few steps on crutches but start to loose energy. (I still can't use my right leg.) However, every day I get a little better and stronger.

I have been spending a great deal of time over the past two weeks in hospitals in preparation for the second leg operation that takes place tomorrow at 6:00AM. Hopefully I won't be in the hospital that long this time. (I can't believe I lived in hospitals for over 3 months.)

I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for all the prayers, good wishes and kind words. I wish I could contact each of you individually to thank you, but I got close to 500 cards and packages. The love I have received has been totally overwhelming. Thank you.

I am very glad to be back. I love the new single, Staying with Me. My good friend Charlene (greeneyes4502) sent me the link and I have been listening to it for the past three weeks.

I look forward to hanging out on the boards again.

Thank you everyone. I had the second surgery on Friday and stayed overnight in the hospital. This time I had a regional block instead of general anesthesia. It worked great. I didn't feel a thing and they did not have to put me on artificial respiration.

I have a cast for the next two weeks and will continue to not put weight on that leg. During the last two weeks of June I will start putting partial weight on that leg. Starting at the beginning of July, I will learn to walk on two legs again. Hopefully by then my lungs will have healed enough so that I have strength to walk.

I can't wait to get back into the swing of things but the doctors tell me that it will take about a year to get back to normal after such major trauma to my entire system.

I can't speak for everyone, but just to see you post on here again, and to know that you are WITH US and on your way to a full recovery, however long that may take....well, it brings tears of JOY to this loopie! i want to tell you how happy i am that you are doing so well. this time last year i had similar probs, but i just want to tell you dont ever give up. PRAY PRAY PRAY. you will have "down days", but keep in mind what you have already overcome. Be positive, you are young, and you will be fine. just listen to your doctors and therapists.
i hope to meet you someday. keep up the great work. you sure have MANY loyal thoughtful friends on this forum.

Dear Familia!

I did it! I read through the entire 23 pages of this post. I know I have said it before, but I can’t thank all of you enough for your prayers, kindness and love. It makes me realize how lucky I am to be alive and to have all of you in my Familia. I am also extremely proud of how all of you pulled together to support a member who was in serious trouble—ME. Reading through all your comments made me tear up a few times. You are very special people and I am going to make it a goal to meet all of you eventually. It may take a while, but I will do it.

I have to admit that yesterday and today I have been struggling emotionality. For the most part I have stayed pretty positive, but the pain from the new operation is so bad that it is beginning to get to me. The doctor gave me some serious painkillers. What they gave me is a new narcotic that is 10X stronger than morphine. Needless to say it makes me very sleepy. If I stay awake, I feel nauseous from the drugs. Either option is depressing when it is so beautiful outside.

To lift my spirits I decided to go back through all the posts on this thread. Your comments have definitely made me feel better.

I was in a coma for the about six weeks, I am told. I have no memory of anything after the first couple of days at the beginning. The next time that things started to register was during my second week at the Rehab Hospital. (I was there April 16-May 16.)

Mike chose not to make this public, but on the Thursday before Easter the doctors told him that I had a 15% chance of survival at best. The doctors and nurses were pretty open with him about the fact that people who go this long usually don’t make it back. I found out a week ago that Mike’s brother and family had to go on a trip around that time and they packed funeral clothes. My niece bought a mourning ring to remember me by. Those stories are beginning to give me some sense of how badly off I really was.

Then one day I started to improve. No one has an explanation for what made me start to improve or what caused the disaster in the first place. I definitely had ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome). The ARDS was caused by some “super germ” I picked up in the hospital. No one at the hospital will give us details. I had never heard of ARDS before. Apparently such things have happened to other people. I just happen to have a really severe case.

I'm sure that being depressed comes with the terrority ... it's been a long road for you and as you travel down it...rest, and know that we are all here to lend you a hand or a shoulder. I hate to know you are in so much pain. I'm sure it must be so hard to stay positive... I honestly don't know anyone but you who could do it. But here you are writing long posts to us when you surely must either want to cry or sleep. You are one amazing lady, and the miracle we witnessed the day you began to recover is a blessing to all of us (many) who were praying for you. I still have you in my prayers, friend. Lean on the Lord when you have times like this... he will see you through it. And we're always here to listen when you feel like talking about it...

Now I know that my prayers every single night for you came true, I am so thankful that my (our) prayers were answered. I can't imagine what you went through, but I do know that you are one blessed "Loopie". I know you are very thankful, but so are we. Just take one day at a time; don't think about tomorrow until it comes. Every morning when you wake up, focus on being alive and be proud of your hubby; and push the awful pain away. I will continue praying that the pain will diminish as time goes by.
