LLB Lingo 101

Here is a brief overview of the lingo used on this board. The original thread was started on June 22, 2005 by Belle and has been added to over the years. Some of the entries have User IDs beside them, referring to the original poster. See following post for original.

Ace Of Bass — Jojo Garza - one smokin' bass player! Henry often introduces his brother that way on stage.

BCB — Shorthand for the "Blue Cat Blues" CD. If you haven't got it, get it!! Blue Cat Blues was a blues club in Dallas (no longer operational) that had a lot of great bands play there. LLB was recorded live there.

The Boys — of course this means Henry, Ringo and Jojo, also referred to as "our boys" or "my boys".

BURRITO THEORY — don’t know if it was coined by Henry or not, but in an interview he explained that LLB music was based on the burrito theory. . . a little bit of this influence and a little bit of that sound wrapped in a tortilla. (#4 Velvetsky0222)

C&C — "Cottonfields and Crossroads". This amazing blues song is on the BCB CD. It is also the title of a documentary by Hector Galan which features LLB and their musical roots. It premiered on 3-17-06 in Austin.

'Cause Los Lonely Boys said so! — The bottom line, the "last word". (#2 WideGlider)

Comfort food for LLB — I would prefer and baloney and cheese sandwich, por favor... (#2 WideGlider)

EOANB - "End of a New Beginning". This is the song the Boys usually close a show with. It is amazing what all they cram into this performance! (#9 Jefalisa)

GARZA SHUFFLE — when they do their footwork in one place, across the stage, left to right, and forward, (on ONDA) (#13 Tasina)

GET LONELY — Rockin' out to LLB in concert, with La Familia, La ONDA... or even just by yourself to the DVD or CD, making schwag or just jammin'. (#13 Tasina)

GOT BURRITO — tee shirts worn by fans, shirt created by Buenos and Jay. (#4 velvetsky0222)

GUITARS
Henry
Sunburst Strat...Tejana
White...Marilyn
Sky Blue...Blue Haven
Pink Strat...Pink
Spanish style wood Strat...El Musico
Black Strat...Enrico or Rico (we're not sure)

Jojo:
Brown...Brownie
Red quilted maple top...Sandie

IDWTLYL — "I don't want to lose your love" The most beautiful song that they recorded on the Sofaking cd, and now on the Santana Cd. (#13 Tasina)

IRAQ/KUWAIT - Aug 31, 2009 – first leg of flight from Austin to Kuwait and then to Iraq. Returned Sept. 9. Stopped at: Camp Afrijan, Camp Virginia, Camp Speicher, Camp Al Asad.
Some notable characters:
* SSG/E6 James “Bleeding Gums” McGuire (960th BSB) tore it up on “Man to Beat” w/his harmonica (hence his new nickname)
* Sgt. Love “Sweet”, security for LLB, is head and shoulders above the rest! (Literally)
* Eduardo Flores Jr. Sgt USMC, an old boyhood friend.
* Airman 1st Class Theodore Wilkins, Saxophone player extraordinaire, matched Henry’s Strat note for note. Too cool!

To get all the details, click here. (http://crossroads.loslonelyboys.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8063)

ISH — He is the guitar technician for LLB and can often be seen working hard on getting the stage set up juussst right! (He's also very sweet and notoriously camera shy!)

JUNE 10th: Los Lonely Boys Day officially (in Austin and HERE on the forum) (#13 Tasina)

KEVIN — Kevin Wommack — business manager for LLB (Loophole Entertainment)

LA FAMILIA — Spanish for 'the family'. In this case, it means all the fans who follow LLB and consider themselves to be part of the extended LLB family (like most, if not all of us do who belong to this forum).

LA ONDA — “the wave” in Spanish which is the name of the LLB Street Team. La Onda is also representative of what LLB's music is based on - a wave of love or of the deep ocean. I'm expressing it badly, but hopefully you get the idea. There is a song on the self-titled CD called "Onda". (#5 VelvetSky0222)

LEFTY — As you face the stage, you are a 'lefty' if you want to sit as close to Henry as possible during a show, because he stands on the left side. (#11 Ajmcgill)

LET’S GET LONELY! — the LLB ‘battle cry’. To ‘get lonely’ means to get really into the band and the music. Put on the CD, crank it up. So when someone wants you to “get lonely”, it is a good thing.

Loopie — a female fan of LLB (LLB + groupie = loopie) (#4 velvetsky0222, #7 AustinStratFan - and #10 Deedeltoro)

Lonely — a male fan of LLB (often in search of a Loopie)

MANITO — an endearment for brother (but in Texican "Hermano")

MANITA — an endearment for sister (but in Texican "Hermana")
both terms introduced to the ST as a way of addressing our familia May 2004 (#5 velvetsky0222)

MIJO (mee-HO) — an endearing term for a boy child (#6 LLBfansinPA)

MIJA (mee-HA) — an endearing term for a girl child

MI ONDA ES MI VIDA — My Onda is my life (#2 WideGlider)

ODR (or OTR) — The annual fan party on the Guadalupe River here in Central Tejas. Started by Jesse Vitela (JesseV2 — whose Strat got played by Henry), the gathering normally includes fans from across the US and Europe. It's a couple of days of fun, food, floating and late night music. ODR II even included a special screening of Hector Galan's Cottonfields and Crossroads, and was attended by Papa Garza and other family members. (AustinStratFan - ASF)

THE OFFERING — when Henry raises his guitar to Heaven before he gets on his knees to finish playing towards the end of EOANB. Velvet's picture of "the offering' is one of the classic LLB photos. (#15 Tasina)

Onda-isms — words that have been morphed from English to LLBese. See next post.

ÓRALE — (OR-ah-lay) a Spanish greeting, prayer, or wish that "all is well" (in my rough interpretation). (As a bit of LLB trivia, this was originally the title for the CD eventually named "Sacred". But DJs across the country were having trouble pronouncing it, so the name was changed.)

RAZA (La Raza) — see below

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Raza

La Raza (Mexican Spanish IPA: [la ˈrasa]; Castilian Spanish IPA: [la ˈraθa]) is a Spanish-language phrase which, while literally translated as "the race", is more often used as a synonym of "el pueblo" or "la gente", both of which mean "the people". It is used to denote the people of Latin America who share the cultural and political legacies of Spanish colonialism, including the Spanish language and culture, and their descendants outside of Latin America. This term is mostly used by Mexicans and Mexican-Americans and on occasion Central Americans. Latin peoples in South America and especially the Caribbean seldom use the term.

The term "La Raza" may also encompass a racial significance associated with "mestizaje", or race-mixing (in the Americas not in Spain). In this sense, the term is inclusive of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, European immigrants, as well as the racial identities that comprise the Iberian peninsula — and all the mixtures among them.

RIGHTY — As you face the stage, you are a 'righty' if you want to sit as close to Jojo as possible during a show, because he stands on the right side. There will be total chaos if the boys ever change the stage setup!

SOFAKING — one of the first, if not the first, LLB CD, now hard to find and going for mucho dinero.

Stacey Adams — a brand of shoe that the boys wear from time to time on stage. Ardent fans will request that Henry wear his red pair on occasion - which he sometimes does! :D This shoe is referred to in "Friday Night" (on the Blue Cat Blues CD)

STRATOGY — when Henry and Jojo play with one hand, behind the back, etc. LLB guitar skills (#17 Tasina)

Street Team (ST) — Each city has a volunteer group of fans or a “street team” which goes to concerts and gives out ‘swag’ or goodies about LLB that they make or buy themselves, such as guitar picks, refrigerator magnets, etc. etc. There’s more to it, but that’s the quick explanation.

Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! — Henry's lament when he makes a mistake (#2 WideGlider)

SWAG — Publicity items (key chains, magnets, buttons, etc.) to pass out at concerts or display to promote LLB. (#13 Tasina)

Texican Chop Shop (TCS) — A shop founded by Los Lonely Boys that fulfills all of your motor vehicle needs. Here - LLB and their crew can "pimp" your ride. Located in San Angelo, Texas (Los Lonely Boys hometown), it's a great place to visit. Run by the boys and their good friend Hector Garcia, the Texican Chop Shop can turn your visions into reality. Or as they say, "The Texican Chop Shop...Bringing Rides To Life".

To Visit the Texican Chop Shop online go to: http://www.texicanchopshop.com
(LLBgal)

New additions will be added to this as things roll along, but this will get you started.

TEXICAN ROCK AND ROLL — Our very own Ringo yells that at each concert, challenging the audience to let the boys know if they are ready for some Texican Rock and Roll. The appropriate response, which will be asked for a few times, is “H*ll Yeah!” which is to be yelled at the top of your lungs, I don’t care how self-conscious you feel! (Tasina)

TIO — for the non-Spanish speaking, it means uncle. You will see Tío Lupe referred to from time to time. He even posts here once in a while. He is the uncle to the boys.

TIA — it means 'aunt' - as in Tia Susie, Tío Lupe's wife. I've heard she makes a mean tortilla!

VAMANOS! — or, "let's go!" (#2 WideGlider)

YA NEVER KNOW — Henry's bow to fate (#2 WideGlider)

YODA — What the boys call Willie Nelson (#18 Ma Rocker & Pa golfer)

Onda-isms

Ondacover — Method used to hide cameras and swag from security at LLB shows (#2 WideGlider)

ONDAfied: Adding LLB stickers, logo, photo, Letters to anything (chairs, laptops, koozies, backpacks, purses, coasters, clocks, fans, piñatas, etc.) making it LLB swag (#13 Tasina)

ONDA-FIX: The cure for that nervous state of distress brought on by prolonged deprivation of Los Lonely Boys music and/or appearances. The cure can take many forms from actually attending a live show to simply listening to a CD (#16 WideGlider)

Onda-itis — a severe addiction to all things LLB (there is no cure so deal with it!) (#1 Jefalisa)

Ondamobile — any car decked out with LLB stickers, personalized plates, Ringo antenna balls, etc. (#8 Vanessav)

Ondaroad again — LLB on tour, or a fan's travels to see them. (#2 WideGlider)

Onda-size...pouring out LLB Love bigger and better!

ONDA SLIDE — when Jojo and Henry ‘dance’ across the stage

OTR: Onda on the River (The Onda Gathering of 2006 in New Braunfels, Texas!) (#9 Jefalisa)

wONDAful — A term used to describe something fantastic about LLB or LLB fans (#3 LLBgal)

There are many, many more Onda-isms. But these are enough so you'll get the idea.

Seriously, folks, this is a great thread. I was thinkin' 'bout starting one myself, and have been accumulating various ONDA-CABULARIES (i.e., LLB vocabulary). So, without further ado, here's a few more:

Vamanos — or, "let's go!"

Ondacover — Method used to hide cameras and swag from security at LLB shows

Mi Onda es mi vida — My Onda is my life

The bottom line — The "last word", as in "That's the bottom line 'cause Los Lonely Boys said so."

Ondaroad again — LLB on tour, or a fan's travels to see them.

Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! — Henry's lament when he makes a mistake

Ya never know... — Henry's bow to fate

I would prefer and baloney and cheese sandwich, por favor... — Los Lonely Boys comfort food

Los Lonely Boys Rock!

Boss DEE coined the phase Loopie. Lonelies came along a few weeks later. Loopie has been used in several articles the past year since 2004.

Burrito theory — is the Boys’ personal theory regarding their music. They are the tortilla and their musical influences are the filling.

GOT BURRITO — tee shirts worn by fans, shirt created by Buenos and Jay
Horale Ringo — Let’s go, Ringo... on Onda.

Uno vez mas — one more time... on Onda.

5. velvetsky0222 Fri Jun 24, 2005
To help the newbies know what Onda means:

Here's what Henry had to say about "Onda"
That song is both a tribute to Carlos [Santana] and us letting everyone know who we are. "Onda" means a wave that can't be stopped. It's like your mother's love, but it's also like pure destruction. It's a very powerful word- it's who you are. And here we come, bro.....

Manito — an endearment for brother (but in Texican "Hermano")
Manita — an endearment for sister (but in Texican "Hermana")
both terms introduced to the ST as a way of addressing our familia May 2004.

6. LLBfansinPA Sun Jun 26, 2005
Mijo (mee-HO) an endearing term for a boy child

Mija (mee-HA) an endearing term for a girl child

sometimes just an endearing term...

7. AustinStratFan Sun Jun 26, 2005
Actually, folks, Loopies y Lonelies goes back a long long way.

I'll see if I can archive the thread from either the OR site or the VH1 site, which is where the first mention came up.

[Nope, both sites messages are gone]

I don't remember all the details of the thread, but I remember that LLBta2Grl and I were part of it, and it started with the idea that faithful followers of Los Lonely Boys needed a name. After all, The Grateful Dead have Deadheads, and someone put up the idea of Los Lonely Boys Groupies, and it got shortened down to Loopies. I commented that it would work only so long as no one referred to us as "fruit" loopies, and that I didn't think that groupies applied much to guys, and offered that "Lonelies" might make some sense. Shortly after that, I think Loopies got picked up in the FAQ for this site and I do believe that Boss Loopie Dee was the first to refer to herself that way...

But I yield the floor to those with better memories than mine...Dee, Mondub, anybody want to jump in on this?

There are, of course, logo pictures for Loopie and Lonelie on the fansite that have been made into t-shirts many times, and I can give you the instructions if necessary.

8. Vanessav Mon Jun 27, 2005
Don’t think I have seen this one yet: Ondamobile - can mean a car that plays LLB, has LLB customized and stock stickers on it, Ringo ball on antennae or carries a bunch of Loopies and Lonelies to a show. Saw a bunch of these cars on the river trip.

9. Jefalisa Wed Jun 29, 2005
EOANB: End of a New Beginning (the ultimate encore song!)

OBTB (or is it OTB?): Onda by the Bay (LLB fans in the San Francisco Bay Area)

SoCalOnda: Southern California fans

OTR: Onda on the River (The Onda Gathering of the year in Texas!)

10. Deedeltoro Wed Jul 06, 2005
Over the hills and far away, in a land called Whittier, under the sycamore trees, Dee worked for FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper.

Now, in January 2004, Dee asked her boss for some time off to see Los Lonely Boys in February, because she had to travel 486 miles to San Francisco to be at their gig @ Slims. He responded, "why yes, and could you bring me back some of that marvelous cherry pie and a cup of joe?"
Like you, I didn't know what that meant.

Alas, this board was not yet in existence. We used to post at the VH1 message board back then. Being very excited, I mentioned that I felt like a groupie, because I was traveling so far to see a band. Then I thought, "oh no, groupie is way toooo derogatory." (Insert thought bubble here). Because of LLB, I thought "LOOPIE" might be a little more appropriate.

And that is how the term was coined, so to speak.

In a coup, I took the name Loopie and ran with it. I had to step on lots of toes and hurt lots of feelings, but hey, that's life! Just kidding, but I am the Boss? Can I get an amen?

Love to you all,
Dee

11. Ajmcgill Mon Jul 11, 2005
Don’t know how Loopie started but I recently found out that I am a "Left Side Loopie" which means I'm "hot for Henry". Ok that isn't exactly what I was told, but that's basically what it means.

12. velvetsky0222 Tue Jul 12, 2005
AUSTINTACIOUS — is actually the Street Team name for Austin. La ONDA AUSTINTACIOUS, or visa versa...

13. Tasina Sun Jul 17, 2005
Now that more of the "pioneers" are back on the boards, I'm hoping ODB (Oh Danny Boy) will show up because he's got a million of these. He's soo good with the
"ONDAisms"

Here's a few I can remember, although may have been mentioned already

Texican Rock and Roll: from the boys being proud of their backgrounds as Texans and Mexicans. . . (self explanatory, but for the record).

Jefalisa thanks for adding
OBTB, Onda by the bay: which includes northern California, all around the bay area which is huge from Sacramento to Watsonville members so far.

ONDAfied: Adding LLB stickers, logo, photo, Letters to anything (chairs, laptops, koozies, backpacks, purses, coasters, clocks, fans, piñatas, etc.) making it LLB swag.

Swag: (or I first heard it pronounced Schwag). Publicity items (see above) to pass out or display to promote LLB.

BSB: Bridge School Benefit, which is the Neil Young annual concert fundraiser for the Bridge school, which his wife Peggy runs. . . and the boys played there in '04, so there are now two bootleg CD's of their set called the BSB cd

GARZA SHUFFLE: when they do their footwork in one place, across the stage, left to right, and forward, (on ONDA)

"GET LONELY" : Rockin' out to LLB in concert, with La Familia, La ONDA. . . or even just by yourself to the DVD or CD, making schwag or just jammin'

“my tomach": Jojo messing up when he was talking about his empty STOMACH.

IDWTLYL: "I don't want to lose your love" The most beautiful song that they recorded on the Sofaking cd, and now on the Santana Cd.

the CHANCELLOR Of LA ONDA: ODB

JUNE 10th: Los Lonely Boys Day officially (in Austin and HERE)

Honorary Texican: dubbed by the chancellor, Claudia from Germany La ONDA and Tasina from La OBTB who traveled to the first annual OTR. I'm sure there will be more to come

14. velvetsky0222 Mon Jul 18, 2005
Woodburner was the 1st nonTexan to be dubbed "Honorary" by me. This is the segment of the post from the thread Jesse started about what Henry said Onda meant.

Woodburner - I haven't seen that any of my fellow Texicans have accepted you as an honorary Texican yet so I'm stepping to the plate. I think you have shown where you stand by your courage, your heart, your brain and for following the ONDA. I lift my burrito and knight you! Now click your heels and be here by July 9th!

Danny has dubbed at least 2 others from the ST but I'm can't remember who they are.

15. Tasina Tue Aug 16, 2005
Not sure if it's listed here, but it was coined by Velvet Sky:

THE OFFERING. . It’s when Henry raises his guitar to Heaven before he gets on his knees to finish playing towards the end of EOANB. Velvet's picture of "the offering' is one of the classic LLB photos.

16. WideGlider Fri Aug 19, 2005
ONDA-FIX: The cure for that nervous state of distress brought on by prolonged deprivation of Los Lonely Boys music and/or appearances. The cure can take many forms from actually attending a live show to simply listening to a CD...and in my case today, viewing Buenos' wONDAful photos and video from the (2005) Park City show.

17. Tasina Thu Aug 25, 2005

You're more than welcome. I saved a few things from the old forum - I couldn't stand to lose everything. This had so much history and so many people's input that it was the first thing I grabbed.

Besides, we need to add to it as the Boys lead us into 2008! :)

I hope they NEVER stop playing MTB - It's our battle cry, Right "LET"S GET LONELY NOW"... Tasina remember when we asked on a thread if People knew how to get Lonely? If you have never experienced this ... OMG. For me, I think we all started really getting into it at Bedford 2004. Yeah - Even in a sit down venue - we all get up and JAM it out! Security can tell us to sit down AFTER that part and I don't mind at all. But The boys love it and JoJo ALWAYS comes to the edge of the stage and YELLS - YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH. I can see it now. Gotta love it.

Onda - Same way .... Especially when Henry or JoJo say's "La Onda es Familia". Gotta do the JoJo jump (and stop long enough to try to get pictures too *LOL*).

In the July 2006 taping and broadcast in Houston - You can see us all jumping up and down. Rob needs to capture that in his filming.

I'm just as surprised as Tasina ... I didn't realize EVERYBODY didn't do this. We've been doing it for over 4 years now. When we were all in Vegas 2005...it was quite a site to see - Onda from across the country jumping in the water. So pick up the LGLN tradition and run with it y'all.

This is kinda of funny, during my first show, the only cd i had heard was Los Lonely Boys, I was on the front row, in front of henry, and the stage was really small. well, they started playing man to beat, and when it was lonely time, henry and jojo and me were all jumping up and down together, i dont know who else was doing it, but i sure as hell was~and that was the exact moment I became addicted, for real. :) :)

Tasina, (I never knew it was a OBTB thing.)

you misinterpreted. It's not just an OBTB thing. . .it's been going on since MTB was first played I'm sure. I just noticed that some people don't and wanted to spread the word.

I think its just a natural reaction to a rockin song, I didnt even know there was a fan club when I did it, and that was in florida in 2005. Its the best part of the show. I have been lucky, none of the shows I have been to made you sit down. I would be kicked out for sure. Thats unamerican, no rocking out at a rock show, that really sucks. :p

I heard MTB live in Corpus (the 12 band show that closed with BBKing playing in 50 degree slant rain) and when Henry harped it, it lifted the hair off my neck.

I can't tell from my pocket personal recorder tape whether they jumped...I don't recall...I was in a state of shock. Certainly, every other time I've heard it, they did...and WE did! Even the seated venues, eh team?

The real challenge, though, was when I wrote a long filler part for the harp (best version to play is the Fillmore, lots more room to play), I decided I'd try jumping. Almost swallowed me harp I did. But, with my tiny bottle mike and belt amp, it can be done. Barely. :-) It makes me appreciate what is must be like to do it with several pounds of guitar / bass - and keep playing.

I remember us doing it at Stubbs and then more so in Bedford 2004. Yeah ASF I have held guitars/bass guitars ... even with the strap carrying most of the weight - jumping up and down, while playing - yep that's not easy. There are 2 times when I warn any fans standing around me; MTB and Onda. Kinda like Johnny and Babe in "Dirty Dancing" ... "This is my dance space - that's your dance space". Except - I"m saying "this is my get lonely space and that's yours".

I think all the jumping and other shenanigans they do on stage is absolutely infectious. I love the energy and excitement they produce. It oozes! Every time I've seen MTB be performed, the crowd has gone wild. I can't wait to see them live again! :)

I just added the Iraq/Kuwait trip to this thread. If anyone knows the name of the saxophone player, please holler.

Thanks!

Vanessa - I'm glad you found this thread. Next time you come across someone being told to get lonely on their birthday, you'll know it's a good thing. :D
