Willie is bringing July 4th picnic to S.A.

Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnic is coming back to Texas and — for the first time — to San Antonio.

Nelson and fellow country music legends Merle Haggard and Ray Price are confirmed to perform at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in the suburb of Selma on July 4, his publicist said.

No official announcement has been made.

But picnic regular Johnny Bush, the San Antonio country music star who wrote Nelson's signature "Whiskey River," said he will perform along with David Allan Coe, one of the original members of the 1970s Outlaw Country movement.

Bush said Nelson told him Texas music icon Pat Green and Tex-Mex rockers Los Lonely Boys also would be on the bill, which is still being put together.

"It's a great idea to have the picnic in San Antonio and so close to home," Bush said. "It's never been here before, and the Verizon should work well."

Indications are that some of the artists who will perform at the picnic, including Bush, also will appear July 3 at Carl's Corner. The truck stop on Interstate 35 East near Hillsboro is the site of one of Nelson's BioWillie diesel stations and a few of his picnics in the 1980s.

A July 3 "warm-up" concert at Carl's Corner has been a tradition for Nelson's picnic.

The show will be a benefit for Freddy Powers, an Austin singer, songwriter, guitarist and longtime member of Haggard's band who has Parkinson's disease, Bush said.

On July 5, Nelson will move the party, and many of the same artists, to Houston, Bush said. The venue for that show has not been confirmed.
